An Old Farmer's Words..Life from the seat of a tractor

Life from the seat of a tractor.. An old Farmer's Words of Wisdom we could all live by....... The last quote fits everyone...I don't care who you are.
Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong.

Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.

Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.

A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.

Words that soak into your ears are whispered....not yelled.

 Meanness don't just happen overnight.

Forgive your enemies; it messes up their heads.

Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you.

It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge.

You cannot unsay a cruel word.

Every path has a few puddles.

When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.

The best sermons are lived, not preached.

Most of the stuff people worry about, ain't never gonna happen anyway.

Don't judge folks by their relatives.

Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

Live a good and honorable life, then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time.

Don't interfere with somethin' that ain't bothering you none.

Timin' has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.

If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'.

Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got.

The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every mornin'.

Always drink upstream from the herd.

Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.

Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin' it back in.

If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around.

Live simply, love generously, care deeply, Speak kindly, and leave the rest to God.

Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

 And, finally.........................................
Some days all you can do is smile and wait for some kind soul to come pull your ass out of the bind you have gotten yourself into....
so, with that said have a delicious day...

Another Growing Old Post....OH NO!!

A good friend sent me this.  I don't know who the author is...but it mirrors my thoughts.  I thank Suz for sharing this with me...I hope you all enjoy it.  Remember it's not bemoaning the fact that we grow old, but rather the comfort and joy we should feel when we are comfortable in our sagging skin and enjoying life.  You may not be here yet, but rest assured, it will sneak up on you when you're not looking.    ENJOY!
I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged, I've become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend. I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn't need, but looks so avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be extravagant.

I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.  I very recently lost a very dear friend...his footprint is forever on my heart.

Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 AM and sleep until noon?   I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 40 & 50's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love... I will.

I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things.  I am working on my memory.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be.

And I shall eat dessert every single day (if I feel like it).

Now this is something that makes me happy...let me show you another one of my favorite ashtrays....CLICK HERE to View My Item This is a circa 1950 Art Deco Eames era Pipe Ashtray.

Immigration Is An Age Old Problem

I just came across this short piece by Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN.

'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin.

But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here.

Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language.. and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'

Theodore Roosevelt 1907

Makes perfect sense to me!

Political Correctness...What is the origin?

Terrorism is now called 'overseas contingency operations'.

The 9 11 attack is now called a 'man-caused disaster.'

Global warming is now 'clinate change'.

Merry Christmas should now be 'happy holidays'.

Blacks are now African Americans...(what if they are not from Africa?) We're going to have to be careful or we will not be able to ask for black coffee! I am American and consider ALL citizens of the U.S. as Americans.

Act of terrorism is now 'Fort Hood murders'.

The list could go on and on.

In an effort to find out just where the term 'political correctness' originated I started doing some research...(OK, I could be doing some laundry or some other household engineering project), I was surprised to find a wealth of information.

The theme remained constant and I thought this article from 2002 told it best. Click here to read the entire article.

This is just a small portion of this article:

"Agustin Blazquez with the collaboration of Jaums Sutton
Monday, April 8, 2002 "

"Does anyone know the origins of Political Correctness? Who originally developed it and what was its purpose?

I looked it up. It was developed at the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt, Germany, which was founded in 1923 and came to be known as the "Frankfurt School." It was a group of thinkers who pulled together to find a solution to the biggest problem facing the implementers of communism in Russia.

The problem? Why wasn't communism spreading?

Their answer? Because Western Civilization was in its way.

What was the problem with Western Civilization? Its belief in the individual, that an individual could develop valid ideas. At the root of communism was the theory that all valid ideas come from the effect of the social group of the masses. The individual is nothing.

And they believed that the only way for communism to advance was to help (or force, if necessary) Western Civilization to destroy itself. How to do that? Undermine its foundations by chipping away at the rights of those annoying individuals.

One way to do that? Change their speech and thought patterns by spreading the idea that vocalizing your beliefs is disrespectful to others and must be avoided to make up for past inequities and injustices.

And call it something that sounds positive: "Political Correctness."

Political Correctness remains just what it was intended to be: a sophisticated and dangerous form of censorship and oppression, imposed upon the citizenry with the ultimate goal of manipulating, brainwashing and destroying our society.

With profound dismay, I have seen how the scourge of Political Correctness has taken hold in the U.S. It is very well entrenched in our educational system, at scientific, religious and community levels, the media, the workplace and even our government.

It is changing the American society from within, and the citizens of this nation are increasingly censoring themselves and losing their freedom of speech out of fear of Political Correctness repression.

All citizens who cherish liberty must reject the scourge of Political Correctness. Freedom of speech must be preserved in America if we are to continue to be free.

It's one thing is to be educated, considerate, polite and have good manners, and another to be forced to self-censor and say things that are totally incorrect in order to comply with the arbitrary dictums of a deceiving and fanatical far-left agenda.

Let's preserve our freedom and say NO to the scourge of Political Correctness."

I guess the best definition by an unknown person is this....."Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."

I have spent so many decades keeping myself safe and living under my own personal 'rock' being a 'sheeple'. Now I am using my brain the way it was intended to be...used.  I'm just backing it up to the 'loading dock' and opening the doors to the facts...just the facts.

Airline security idiocy of the day: Milblogger Michael Yon handcuffed, Joan Rivers blocked

Airline security idiocy of the day: Milblogger Michael Yon handcuffed, Joan Rivers blocked
By Michelle Malkin • January 5, 2010 12:38 PM File under “Homeland Security is a Joke.”

Milblogger/independent war correspondent extraordinaire Michael Yon reports that he was stopped at Sea-Tac airport and handcuffed by TSA agents:

Got arrested at the Seattle airport for refusing to say how much money I make. (The uniformed ones say I was not “arrested”, but they definitely handcuffed me.) Their videos and audios should show that I was polite, but simply refused questions that had nothing to do with national security. Port authority police eventually came — they were professionals — and rescued me from the border bullies.

'I’ve met Michael and have blogged about his enterprising war coverage as an embed in Iraq and Afghanistan for years. The idea of him being treated as a national security threat and handcuffed is as ridiculous as anything we’ve seen from Janet Clown-itano and her cadre.' said Malkin.

Speaking of ridiculous airline security episodes:

Joan Rivers is many things: Funny lady. Jewelry mogul. Red carpet mercenary. But a terrorist?

Can we talk?

Rivers, 76, was deemed a danger to national security and booted from a Newark-bound flight in Costa Rica on Sunday by a jittery Continental Airlines gate agent who found the two names on her passport fishy.

Her passport reads: Joan Rosenberg AKA Joan Rivers. Rosenberg was her late husband’s last name.

The “nasty and cruel” Continental gate agent bumped Rivers from the last flight out Sunday and the comedian found herself alone (her daughter, Melissa, flew out to Los Angeles earlier in the day) and with no ATM card and just $100 cash, she said.

Rivers’ tale of woe put a famous face on travel’s new reality – one that leaves many feeling like common criminals.

“If I were going to make up an alias, I wouldn’t pick Rosenberg. I’d pick Jolie or Pitt,” said Rivers, back home Monday in New York with her sense of humor intact. “Do terrorists wear Manolo Blahniks? I can tell you Donna Karan does not make anything that hides a bomb,” she said.

We’re at Code Red Elmo on the Homeland Insecurity Scale.  Totally hillarious and pathetic at the same time....

Bush vs Obama

Bush vs Obama

Let's get one thing straight right off...I was not a Bush proponent nor am I an Obama proponent.  I think for myself and when I received this...I thought on it for some time and have come to the conclusion that it makes sense....what do you think?

If George W. Bush had been the first President to need a teleprompter installed to be able to get through a press conference, would you have laughed and said this is more proof of how inept he is on his own and is really controlled by smarter men behind the scenes?

If George W. Bush had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to take Laura Bush to a play in NYC, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had reduced your retirement plan's holdings of GM stock by 90% and given the unions a majority stake in GM, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had made a joke at the expense of the Special Olympics, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had given Gordon Brown a set of inexpensive and incorrectly formatted DVDs, when Gordon Brown had given him a thoughtful and historically significant gift, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had given the Queen of England an iPod containing videos of his speeches, would you have thought this embarrassingly narcissistic and tacky?

If George W. Bush had bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had visited Austria and made reference to the non-existent "Austrian language," would you have brushed it off as a minor slip?
If George W. Bush had filled his cabinet and circle of advisers with people who cannot seem to keep current in their income taxes, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had been so Spanish illiterate as to refer to "Cinco de Cuatro" in front of the Mexican ambassador when it was the 5th of May (Cinco de Mayo), and continued to flub it when he tried again, would you have winced in embarrassment?

If George W. Bush had mis-spelled the word "advice" would you have hammered him for it for years like Dan Quayle and potatoe as proof of what a dunce he is?

If George W. Bush had burned 9,000 gallons of jet fuel to go plant a single tree on Earth Day, would you have concluded he's a hypocrite?

If George W. Bush's administration had okayed Air Force One flying low over millions of people followed by a jet fighter in downtown Manhattan causing widespread panic, would you have wondered whether they actually get what happened on 9-11?

If George W. Bush had failed to send relief aid to flood victims throughout the Midwest with more people killed or made homeless than in New Orleans , would you want it made into a major ongoing political issue with claims of racism and incompetence?

If George W. Bush had created the position of 32 Czars who report directly to him, bypassing the House and Senate on much of what is happening in America , would you have approved.

If George W. Bush had ordered the firing of the CEO of a major corporation, even though he had no constitutional authority to do so, would you have approved?

If George W Bush had proposed to double the national debt, which had taken more than two centuries to accumulate, in one year, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had then proposed to double the debt again within 10 years, would you have approved?

So, tell me again, what is it about Obama that makes him so brilliant and impressive? Can't think of anything? Don't worry. He's done all this in 12 months -- so you'll have three years to come up with an answer.

They are just 2 more human beings in a powerful position....do we need government to control nearly every aspect of our lives?  We must think carefully and make informed decisions.  Don't believe everything you see, hear, or read....be responsible and make informed decisions.  If it's a politician telling you  they are doing 'stuff' for your benefit..beware!!!

Now for a brief commercial plug...I am making an effort to sell the remainder of my Collectible Advertising Tobacciana Ashtrays. I've sold alot, have a bunch listed for sale and have about 3 more boxes to get listed.

Collecting Tobacciana, or smoking paraphernalia, has been growing and while most items are still readily accessible at garage sales, second hand stores and flea markets, there are many long discontinued Smoking Collectibles that are hard to find. The most popular collectibles today in this category include the early Advertisments both on and off the products, Novelty items, Gambling and Casino, Gold and Sterling plated items, limited production items such as Commemorative and Political items, and certainly anything marked "Occupied Japan" which was manufactured only from 1945 to 1953.

Collectible Hotel Statler Matchstand Ashtray

Remember when every home and place of business had ashtrays of one kind or another sitting around?

With the demise of smoking, ashtrays and advertising tobacciana items are rarely being made any more and they will, one day soon, become a hot collectible. Add to or start your collection today.

EX-SMOKERS, HOLD ON TO YOUR SMOKING COLLECTIBLES
When you quit smoking, keep your tobacciana collectibles. Tobacco stands without the top parts are good plant stands. Cigarette cases are popular as small purses that will hold a credit card, driver's license and a little money.

Tobacco tins and boxes are interesting storage containers, and the box labels and cigar bands work well for decoupage projects. Best of all, ashtrays can be used to hold short stemmed flowers or kept in the bedroom to hold earrings and rings overnight.

"Riding on the Freeway of Lust"

"While outwardly calm, Wilhelmina's thoughts were racing. True, she and Hortence had been in the Yosemite Super8 RV lot for only 12 hours, but already Wilhelmina sensed an erotic charge more powerful than any other they'd yet encountered.....Could she have imagined the hungry glances of the couple in the 20 foot Airstream two lots down? She hoped not. Him, with his rugged all-terrain walker - and her, wrapped seductively in an alpaca shawl. Yes, they were swingers all right. And Wilhelmina knew just which jello mold she would take over to break the ice..."

It doesn't matter at all - because you make me hot! That's right, hot like gravy on pork chops, hot like a van without air conditioning, hot like Sanka in an insulated travel mug. And if I make you hot too, then come with me now - right away! Come with me to Marguerite Volpare's condominium, where the three of us can make hot funky music together!"

Corporations Scrambling to Economize and Streamline.....Collecting Tobacciana Ashtrays

Corporations Scrambling to Economize and Streamline

If you've ever worked for a boss that reacts before getting the facts and thinking things through, you will love this!

Arcelor-Mittal Steel, feeling it was time for a shakeup, hired a new CEO. The new boss was determined to rid the company of all slackers. On a tour of the facilities, the CEO noticed a guy leaning on a wall. The room was full of workers and he wanted to let them know that he meant business.

He walked up to the guy leaning against the wall and asked, 'How much money do you make a week?'

A little surprised, the young man looked at him and replied, 'I make $400 a week. Why?'

The CEO then handed the guy $1,600 in cash and screamed, 'Here's four weeks' pay, now GET OUT and don't come back.'

Feeling pretty good about himself, the CEO looked around the room and asked, 'Does anyone want to tell me what that goof-ball did here? '
From across the room came a voice, 'Pizza delivery guy from Domino's.'

Now that's what I call a GENEROUS TIP!! Photobucket

ON A MORE SERIOUS NOTE...........
I have been working "overtime" listing a whole whack of ashtrays that I have been collecting for years. A lot of them bring back memories....others just tell a little story about where they came from.

Actually, the term for a receptacle to dispose of your ash and butts ....... "ashtray" was conjured up in Great Britain about 1880. Smoking tobacco has been used since the 1500's. As the different eras were born, so were different ashtray designs. Materials used to make them ranged from the precious gold, silver, marble, etc to cheap metals, ceramics, porcelain, glass.

As smoking increased in popularity, businesses got the idea to advertise their business or product on ashtrays. After all, ashtrays were everywhere. Advertising ashtrays were born and folks started "borrowing" them as mementos of stays in hotels, motels, vacations, etc. Pretty soon every business had them on tables, in lobbys, kitchen tables, gas stations, mom and pop diners to the most luxurious of places.

Vintage ashtrays that are high on collectors' wish lists include those from early- and mid-20th century luxury hotels and popular nightspots, like New York's Stork Club; automobilia (especially tire companies); defunct casinos; and planes, trains, and ocean liners. For example, a Pullman Company smoking stand (free-standing ashtray) recently sold online for $710, while a MetalCraft airplane smoking stand went for $995!

Here is a list of the Casinos in Las Vegas that are no more......

I am sure there are more that I do not know about, but this is a start. If you come across an ashtray from a little unknown Casino from some obscure place, snap it up.

You can learn lots of trivia researching ashtrays. I have one listed at Onlineauction.com from the oldest hotel casino in Las Vegas. Opened in 1906 and in 1907 was the first telephone customer and their phone number was 1..... Photobucket

Today, we all know smoking has become a generally unacceptable habit and health risk. There are very few places where one can light up. "No Smoking" signs are everywhere and even some new cars no longer have Lighters and Ashtrays as interior equipment.

It only makes sense that since advertising dollars are no longer spent on ashtrays, the value of these items from earlier eras are becoming more valuable and one day will be highly sought after.

I have to stop buying them and clear out boxes of them...so if you want to start collecting or add to an existing collection, here's an opportunity to find some deals. Start with buying one a week and grow it from there....
