To Ignore The Facts Does Not Change The Facts...Halloween..Witches..Christmas

Photobucket

Don't miss the 'boat'.....I've learned....That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.

Seek out the facts and vote with your knowledge!

Photobucket I did a halloween post a couple of weeks back but I forgot to include a snippet on witches....

Lets see....it was said that to actually meet a witch, you have to put your clothes on wrong side out and then walk backwards on Halloween night...then at midnight you would see a witch. (I told my grandsons that if they misbehave, they'll surely see one at their house...witch on a broom, I mean!) Yes, in years past, I, on occasion would jump astride my 'super sonic broom' and fly wantonly about the room or straight for the intended target.

Il Divo vs Football....No Contest

Football season is now in full swing.....Iamboredtotears!!  Non-stop assault on the ears...screaming, whistles blowing, tantrums being thrown, butt patting, etc...

I found something that has given me the most goose bumps in manyayear....Il Divo!  Candy for the ears...

'Il Divo' in Italian literally means a male (singular) 'prima donna.'

They are:

American tenor David Miller;

Swiss tenor Urs Buhler;

Spanish baritone Carlos Marin;

French pop singer Sebastien Izambard.

This group was initially brought together in 2004 by the infamous Simon Cowell after intensive worldwide auditions.

The virtuoso blending of operatic techniques with both romantic and popular tradition has taken the world by storm.  They have sold over 22 million albums, the first three of which were 'Il Divo', 'Ancora,' and 'Sempre,' the last two translated into English are 'Again' and 'Always.'

Lastly, the group decided to work with only one producer, a longtime collaborator named  Steve McCutcheon (aka Steve Mac).  A musical genius, Mac is able to create beautiful orchestrations by experience.

Take a moment and give your eyes and ears a treat watching and listening to this group singing 'Amazing Grace' like you've never heard it before.  The four guys performed "Amazing Grace" in the beautiful arena in Pula, Croatia .

This coliseum (smaller but better preserved than the one in Rome ) where the concert and recording were done is one of the most well-preserved Roman coliseums in the world.  They are all excellent but make sure you hear the baritone....

Is That A Dead Mule I Smell?...Bailout Program

mule Pictures, Images and Photos Curtis and Leroy saw an ad in the Starkville Daily News Newspaper in Starkville, MS. and bought a mule for $100.

The farmer agreed to deliver the mule the next day.

The next morning the farmer drove up and said, "Sorry, fellows, I have some bad news, the mule died last night."

Curtis and Leroy replied, "Well, then just give us our money back."

The farmer said, "Can't do that. I went and spent it already."

They said, "OK then, just bring us the dead mule."

The farmer asked, "What in the world ya'll gonna do with a dead mule?"

Curtis said, "We gonna raffle him off."

The farmer said, "You can't raffle off a dead mule!"

Leroy said, "We shore can! Heck, we don't hafta tell nobody he's dead!"

A couple of weeks later, the farmer ran into Curtis and Leroy at the Piggly Wiggly grocery store and asked.

"What'd you fellers ever do with that dead mule?"
They said,"We raffled him off like we said we wuz gonna do."

Leroy said,"Shucks, we sold 500 tickets fer two dollars apiece and made a profit of $898."

The farmer said,"My Lord, didn't anyone complain?"

Curtis said, "Well, the feller who won got upset. So we gave him his two dollars back."

Curtis and Leroy now work for the government.

They're overseeing the Bailout Program.

Halloween Factoids....Have Bats in Your Belfry?

Photobucket

It is now the time of year I start feeling every muscle and bone in my body going through its process of mourning the end of summer. Time to get out the stylish sweat pants with the elastic waist and the baggy sweaters and sweatshirts. AAAh....at least they're comforable.  This time of year I can wear my supphose with impunity...nobody will see them...
Halloween Pictures, Images and Photos

After I've finished putting away the tank tops and shorts and reloading my drawers with the aforementioned 'fashions', I've got to shop for the Halloween snacks and start my holiday shopping lists.

I was thinking about Halloween this morning and went searching for some factoids....I came up with a few.....
Flying Bats 2 Pictures, Images and Photos

If someone says you have 'bats in your belfry'...say thank you since it would mean you have bats in your yard (if you don't have a bell tower), where they eat about 1,000 mosquitos for a meal.

The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarkable nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.

There are more than 1,000 species of bats in the world! They live on every continent of the world, except Antarctica. Bats do not live in areas where it is very hot or very cold.

To catch insects, bats use their wings. Their wings are the only part of their bodies not covered by hair, but with thin, tough skin. Bats use their wings like hands, and they have little thumbs and wrists on them.

Bats have long been associated with Halloween but the connection is less skeery than some would suspect. In Halloween's ancient origins people would gather together around giant bonfires to ward off evil spirits. Attracted to the warmth and bright light of these fires were many small flying insects. Natural food for hungry bats. People saw the bats flickering in and out of the firelight during the festivals and they became a feature of Halloween lore. They are the only true flying mammals.

Ever used the saying 'blind as a bat'?  I have, but guess what?  They aren't blind..

Our modern celebration of Halloween is a descendent of the ancient Celtic fire festival called "Samhain". The word is pronounced "sow-in (rhymes with cow).

Folk tradition tells us of many divination practices associated with Samhain. Among the most common were divinations dealing with marriage, weather, and the coming fortunes for the year. These were performed via such methods as ducking for apples, and apple peeling.

Ducking for apples was a marriage divination. The first person to bite an apple would be the first to marry in the coming year.   I'll bet there's some folks out there wishing they hadn't been in that early apple bobbing event!

Apple peeling was a divination to see how long your life would be. The longer the unbroken apple peel, the longer your life was destined to be.

In Scotland, people would place stones in the ashes of the hearth before retiring for the night. Anyone whose stone had been disturbed during the night was said to be destined to die during the coming year.

Photobucket

Then we have Jack O'Lanterns.......

Pumpkin carving is a popular part of modern America's Halloween celebration. Come October, pumpkins can be found everywhere in the country from doorsteps to dinner tables. Despite the widespread carving that goes on in this country every autumn, few Americans really know why or when the jack o'lantern tradition began. Read on to find out!

The practice originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed "Stingy Jack." According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn't want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form. Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul.

The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree's bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years.

Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth with ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as "Jack of the Lantern," and then, simply "Jack O'Lantern."

In Ireland and Scotland, people began to make their own versions of Jack's lanterns by carving scary faces into turnips or potatoes and placing them into windows or near doors to frighten away Stingy Jack and other wandering evil spirits. In England, large beets are used. Immigrants from these countries brought the jack o'lantern tradition with them when they came to the United States. They soon found that pumpkins, a fruit native to America, make perfect jack o'lanterns.

What? Tax On Sugar Drinks..or Who Says We're Too Fat?

What is happening?
Being an independant minded person, I have been watching and listening to the news every day. I wonder how many of you realize the extent things are changing in our country? Do you ignore it?

This isn't the BIG thing but definitely something to think about. If this passes, we will ALL be affected.

Do you think it is appropriate for the government to impose a 1 cent per OUNCE tax on all drinks containing sugar? (It's not that they are worried about our sugar consumption....it's just another way to TAX US)

I saw this and decided it pretty much says it all...

What was I thinking? Now I appreciate vintage (s'pose it is because I am vintage?) and will opt to buy vintage over shiny new Made in China!!! Buy vintage....like a fine wine....it really is better!

Google does not use the "keywords" meta tag ..I am so confused...

I know I don't know much but I was told by somebody to use correct keywords for my items. Then I get this article in my email this morning and wondered if anybody else was under the same impression. Very interesting!

Google does not use the "keywords" meta tag in its web search ranking. Google's Matt Cutts,
can be seen or read the article in a Webmaster Central video. This is not breaking news, by any means, but there are a lot of people out there that still put a lot of stock into this. Read the entire article and see the video. This is just an excerpt.

"In fact, Cutts mentions that people have sued each other for meta tag keyword theft, when really this is just a waste of everybody's time, because they don't even play a role in the ranking of sites on Google. Have you been under the impression that the keywords meta tag was important to ranking in Google?

"About a decade ago, search engines judged pages only on the content of web pages, not any so-called "off-page" factors such as the links pointing to a web page," says Cutts. "In those days, keyword meta tags quickly became an area where someone could stuff often-irrelevant keywords without typical visitors ever seeing those keywords. Because the keywords meta tag was so often abused, many years ago Google began disregarding the keywords meta tag."

Just because Google ignores the "keywords" meta tag, that doesn't mean it ignores all meta tags. In fact, there are several that the search engine definitely uses. For one, Google sometimes uses the "description" meta tag as the text for search results snippets. But even in then, the "description" meta tag isn't used to influence ranking."

On a lighter note...this little joke is funny...I don't care who you are...

Going to get an H1N1 Swine Flu Shot?

Here's the scoop on the Swine Flu Vaccine.....

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the first doses of swine flu vaccine should get into Americans in a couple of weeks -- but through their noses, not their arms.

Around 3.4 million doses of a swine flu version of the spray vaccine known as FluMist will be shipped the first week of October. Each state will get a share according to its population size.

The nasal spray vaccine won the race because it contains a live, though chemically crippled, form of the pandemic H1N1 virus. Producing the live-virus vaccine was faster than killed-virus preparation used in shots.

Let's get this straight..do NOT get the Flumist if you are pregnant or an infant under 6 mths old, or if you're over 49 UNLESS you have diabetes or heart disease.

If you're healthy and are a health care worker or are aged two to 18 years old, OR if you have close contact with babies younger than 6 months, or are 19 to 24 years old. Practically need to create a spreadsheet to figure that out.

I don't see a category for old farts over 70 so guess I won't worry about it.

I did hear on Dr Rosenfelds Sunday House Call segment yesterday morning that because the nasal mist is made with a live virus, to be very careful and not infect anyone who is health compromised as it could be spread. OK, I've expended enough time on the H1N1 Swine Flu Vaccine....

......forget the whole thing and go get a good bottle of whiskey!!! Ever see a bug live in a bottle of whiskey?

You may think this little story has nothing to do with flu...but keep reading and you'll see...

Miss Beatrice, The church organist, was in her eighties and had never been married. She was admired for her sweetness and kindness to all.

One afternoon the pastor came to call on her and she showed him into her quaint sitting room. She invited him to have a seat while she prepared tea.

As he sat facing her old Hammond organ, The young minister noticed a cute glass bowl sitting on top of it. The bowl was filled with water, and in the water floated, of all things, a condom!

When she returned with tea and scones, they began to chat. The pastor tried to stifle his curiosity about the bowl of water and its strange floater, but soon it got the better of him and he could no longer resist.

'Miss Beatrice', he said, 'I wonder if you would tell me about this?'
pointing to the bowl.
'Oh, yes,' she replied, 'Isn't it wonderful? I was walking through the park a few months ago and I found this little package on the ground.
The directions said to place it on the organ, keep it wet and that it would prevent the spread of disease. Do you know I haven't had the flu All winter.'

Now, I ask you, do we really need a flu shot?? Get a jug of whiskey and float a condom...bada bing bada boom........

Thought for the day...Breast Implants & Viagra...

Don't remember where I read this the other day...but have been thinking on it ever since...

Thought for the day: There is more money being spent on breast implants and Viagra today than on Alzheimer's research. This means that by 2040, there should be a large elderly population with perky boobs and huge erections and absolutely no recollection of what to do with them.

Then....we could go into musing about how all those tatoos will look on an 80 yr old body....Photobucket

What's the Origin of 'Spotted Dick'? Buy it on Amazon?

I was simply sitting with my cuppajoe reading the new post from I Hate My Message Board ...then I followed the link to 'Chicken In A Can' which lead to another link about 'spotted dick'.....well, come on...I'm old but I am human and always thirsty for knowledge (face it ole gal...you're just nosy). So, I had to do some research on where this tasty delight got it's name.

First thing I came to is an actual listing on Amazon for 'Spotted Dick' in a can AND there are 2 that are Used &/or new (I guess used and new is the same price...wonder how used the used one is?)
Heinz Spotted Dick Sponge Pudding, 10-Ounce Cans (Pack of 6) by Heinz

2 Used & new from $22.88

Get it by Friday, Sep 11 if you order in the next 5 hours and choose one-day shipping.
Eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping.

So, not satisfied that I knew why something in a can is called 'spotted dick'...I searched on....Wickipedia and found this....Photobucket
Spotted Dick is a steamed suet pudding containing dried fruit (usually currants) commonly served with custard, and a standard part of English cuisine. Spotted refers to the dried fruit (which resemble spots) and Dick may be a contraction/corruption of the word pudding (from the last syllable) or possibly a corruption of the word dough.[1] Another explanation offered for the latter half of the name is that it comes from the German word for "thick," in reference to the thickened suet mixture.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the earliest documented reference is a recipe for "Plum Bolster or Spotted Dick," in Alexis Soyer's The Modern Housewife of Menagere (1850).
The catering staff at Flintshire County Council and hospital managers at Gloucestershire NHS Trust renamed the pudding Spotted Richard on menus due to the use of Dick, which is short for Richard but also slang for penis, in the original name. Gloucestershire NHS Trust restored the original name in 2002.

I'm leaning toward the mispronunciation of the German word for 'thick'....makes sense to me....

Then I found this.....

A Staff Report from Straight Dope Science Advisory Board (Fighting Ignorance Since 1973)
What's the origin of "spotted dick"?
August 27, 2002
Dear Straight Dope:
Can you shed any light on the etymology of "Spotted Dick"? It's a British concoction, a steamed, log-shaped suet pudding studded with currants, hence the "spotted." But why the "dick"?
The first explanation that leaps to mind seems highly unlikely, but I haven't been able to find a detailed and credible account of how this venerable dessert really did get its name. The best I found in over 40 pages of Google results was someone who thinks he read somewhere that the words "dick," "dog" and "duff" when applied to puddings were all derivatives of the word "dough." OK, "duff" and "dog" seem pretty plausible linguistic mutations, but even allowing for strange regional British accents, "dick" seems a little bit of a stretch. My British parents are also at a loss to explain.
— Jayne

We just tackled the origin of "Dick" as a nickname and a few other usages--a riding whip, an apron, abbreviation for "dictionary," a policeman, a declaration, and (of course), the penis.
With all these varied usages, you got a problem with "dick" being also derived from "pudding"? My sources all pretty much agree with the derivation, without being specific how. However, I can see "pudding" become "puddink" becoming "puddick" and then just "dick."

The word "dick" has appeared in any number of strange places. Around the 1840s, "dick" was used to mean a type of hard cheese; when treacle sauce was added, it became "treacle dick", and finally when currants or raisins were added (looking like little spots), the "spotted dick" was born.

The earliest recipes for spotted dick are from 1847. For non-British readers, "spotted dick" is a boiled suet pudding, with bits of dried fruit (usually raisins or currants) that (as already noted) look like little spots.

The Oxford Companion to Food comments that, strictly speaking, "spotted dick" is made by taking a flat sheet, spreading sugar and raisins on it, then rolling it up. A similar dessert is "spotted dog," a plain cylinder of suet paste with the raisins and currants and sugar stuck into it, so that the spots are visible on the outside. Both spotted dick and spotted dog were traditionally boiled (or even steamed) in a cloth, but nowadays they are usually baked.

The dessert is slightly different in Ireland. In Ireland in the late 1800s, the tradition of yeast-bread manufacture was not strong, so most breads were raised with bicarbonate of soda and an acid, rather than with yeast, and thus called soda breads. Thus, the spotted dick in Ireland is sweet soda bread, with sugar, currants, and raisins, and it's also called the spotted dog or railway cake.
— Dex

Well, there you have it...the complete story on spotted dick in a can, where you can buy it...even a used can(?) and variations from different countries...the whole thing boils down to I used the 'inquiring minds want to know' philosophy into "what the heck, I have some time to devote to this 'thirst for knowledge'". Makes me sound very professorial don't you think? AND it all started with the reading of a new blog post from I Hate My Message Board and following some links. See how reading blogs can give you brain exercise and a delightful addition to your 'mind bloat'?

Seriously, I'm thinking I might buy a case of 6 to give as unusual Christmas Gifts....Curiocache might just like these...check out her Store..she has lots of unusual items!! Step out of the box this holiday season and buy 'unusual'! Fleapirates Plunder has piratetastic things...check the Plunder place for gifts.

Enough of this...I hope your life has been enriched with this new knowledge....

Of course, to coin a phrase from Aesthetics48 ...a Shameless Plug...my favorite place is

I will be dilligently adding a whack of stuff to my store in the next week or two (barring any more trips into the 'light fantastic' world of investigating the truly important things in life like 'spotted dick').

Reflecting on 9-11-2001...

Never forget that TERRORISTS attacked us on our own homeland....
Photobucket

AFTERMATH 91101

7 years ago our lives were changed
Never to be the same
And to think it all started
Because someone hijacked a plane
Terrorists they called them
A word that became well known
They destroyed so many lives that day
They attacked our home
The United States stood frozen
For a moment in time
As we watched those people
Commit an unexplainable crime
Then sadness and emotion came
Our fears took flight
And we realized we had
To stand up and fight
Our heroes our brave
All banded so strong
To face our enemy
Who we knew was wrong
They brave they're lives
And sometimes they're lost
I believe in this war
But at what cost?
We've lost so many soldiers
Yet gained no respect
From the people we fight
Who never seem to reflect
On the havoc they reeked
That September day
When for just one moment
America all stopped to pray
So today stand up
Remember and be proud
America band together
Dont be afraid to be loud
Show them our pride
In the Red White and Blue
Where freedom is a word
That rings Loud and True
Make them remember
The loved ones lost that day
And everyday since
Kneel down and pray
Pray loud and Thank God!
Wherever you may be
That we live in America
The LAND OF THE FREE

Ever heard an Outhouse referred to as BC?

The story is told of a lady who was rather old-fashioned, always quite delicate and elegant, especially in her language. She and her husband were planning a week's vacation in Florida, so she wrote to a particular campground asking for a reservation. Photobucket

She wanted to make sure the campground was fully equipped, but didn't quite know how to ask about the toilet facilities. She just couldn't bring herself to write the word "toilet" in her letter. After much deliberation, she finally came up with the old-fashioned term BATHROOM COMMODE. Photobucket But when she wrote that down, she still thought she was being too forward. So she started all over again and rewrote the entire letter referring to the bathroom commode merely as the BC. "Does the campground have it's own BC?" is what she actually wrote.

Well, the campground owner wasn't old-fashioned at all, and when he got the letter, he just couldn't figure out what the woman was talking about. That BC business really stumped him.

After worrying about it for awhile, he showed the letter to several campers, but they couldn't imagine what the lady meant either. So the campground owner, finally coming to the conclusion that the lady must be asking about he local Baptist Church, sat down and wrote the following reply:

Dear Madam:
I regret very much the delay in answering your letter, but I now take pleasure in informing you that a BC is located nine miles north of the campground and is capable of seating 250 people at one time. I admit it is quite a distance away, if you are in the habit of going regularly, but no doubt you will be pleased to know that a great number of people take their lunches along and make a day of it. They usually arrive early and stay late. It is such a beautiful facility and the acoustics are marvelous. Even the normal delivery sounds can be heard.

The last time my wife and I went was six years ago, and it was so crowded we had to stand up the whole time we were there. It may interest you to know that right now a supper is planned to raise money to buy more seats.

I would like to say it pains me very much not to be able to go more regularly, but it surely is no lack of desire on my part. As we grow old, it seems to be more of an effort, particularly in cold weather.

If you do decide to come down to our campground, perhaps I could go with you the first time you go, sit with you, and introduce you to all the other folks.

Remember, this is a friendly community.

Sincerely,
Campground Owner

Bless her heart...this proper little lady is probably still on her FC (fainting couch) with the vapors! I enjoyed this little story and just wanted to share it with you all.
