Fight the Nemises of the Elderly - Exercise the Brain

I keep being told my forgetfulness is normal as we age.  We need to exercise our brain not by just reading something but really thinking about it.  There are times when I feel like there is a cat 5 tornado flying around in my brain.  I need to master the art of slowing it down and stop the constant flying debris from littering my thought processes.  Pick an item...think about it then put it away.

I don't want to be the elderly person that KNOWS EVERYTHING.  I remember that all too well.  We cared for my husbands mother the last several years of her life.  I do not want to be the mean ole lady that knows everything!  This is what I am fighting to stave off......so I have to exercise my brain to make sure the cobwebs do not build up in there.

I am going to make a supreme effort to exercise my thought processes.   I'm physically feeling old today so my  first thought is what Cora Harvey Armstrong says,"Inside every older person is a younger person -- wondering what the hell happened."   The next thought is 'who is Cora Harvey Armstrong'?  Do you know?  After thinking about it for a spell...I had to look it up.  A very interesting lady.   Look it up....good exercise for the brain.

Nature gives you the face you have at twenty; it is up to you to merit the face you have at fifty. ~ Coco Chanel.  Oh, Coco, now you're getting personal....you mean this face that has more lines than a metropolitan road map is MY fault.  I always thought those were character lines.  I must be quite a character.  I really don't like all those little lines around my mouth....looks like I have been sucking lemons!  (Maybe I could believe they were from too many tequila shots?)  Then there's the deep furrow between my eyes...I know that came from the many many years of concentrating too hard.  Oh, those deep laugh lines.  Actually those are tolerable....I've always had a somewhat strange sense of humor.  Laughing is excellent therapy.

Listening to the news can be unsettling....they were just saying somebody had been assassinated....How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?  I don't want to have either....I'm getting naturally old quick enough. I don't want to exercise that subject any more.

Once you're in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity?  This has been floating around in my brain ever since my MIL was adamant that she be buried in her very best incl jewelry .....but she was cremated!  I'm just saying, ya think we should pack a bag?  That reminds me of when she was cremated and given to us in a small box.  We then put her in the car to drive her to her final resting place in Spooner, Wisconsin.  Do you put her in the trunk or in the back seat?  It was October and was freezing at night...when we stopped for the night, do we bring her in or leave her in the trunk?  I'm tellin ya, there was a lot of thinkin about that.  Even tho she was meaner than the junk yard dog, I struggled with putting her in the trunk, etc.  We laid her to rest and slept well on the way home.

We were looking at hams at the market the other day and I got to thinking.....what disease did Cured Ham actually have?  I don't know but in the olden days we would cure it with salt that would draw out water and retard the bacteria growth, then hang it high in one of the closed in outbuildings till it was really jerkyfied.   I guess they wouldn't sell very many 'Infected Sick' Hams.

Bette Davis says "Old age ain't no place for sissies."  So let me enjoy life and laugh....dance, sing, wear funny clothes and different color socks and hope that I don't wear my underwear on top of my pants or on my head.

I'm tired of thinking lets all go find the best bargains on the NET...CLICK HERE for Online Auction.  It's going to be a wonderful holiday season.  Enjoy!

How's Your Right Brain?

Ever wonder how your right brain is functioning?  Time yourself....
Find the man between the coffee beans. Doctors have concluded that if
you find the man in 3 seconds that the right half of your brain is better
developed than most people.

If you find the man between three seconds
and one minute, then the right half of your brain is developed normally.

If you find the man between one minute and three minutes, then the
right half of your brain is functioning slowly and you need to eat more
protein.

If you have not found the man after three minutes the right half of your
brain is a mess, and the only advise is to look more for these types of
exercises to make that part of the brain stronger.
Photobucket

WHEW! I feel better now...I found the man!

The man is really there. Now that I know  the right side of my brain is highly developed, I'm wondering what's up with the left side...there's no test for that side?   Guess I'll investigate......

Health Care Reform Will Allow Artists to Quit Their Day Jobs.....YIPPEE!!

I am SO excited...Thursday night on the Rachel Maddow Show, Nancy Pelosi said  because I have always wanted to paint and write, (you know, be an artist) that when the new health care bill was in place I could quit my job, not to worry, she and everybody else would pay my health care insuramce premium.  FINALLY all my artistic juices can be utilized!

I never DREAMED that I would have this opportunity to spend my days in the park painting and gazing at the clouds....waiting for some prose to overtake me.....sigh.....I've got to check and see if she'll also take care of my mortgage payment and food, etc.

Do you think she will buy the gas for my car so I can get to the park? I mean,  I'll need gas to transport all my stuff to the park in my car so I can be truly artistic..... I can't REALLY just live on the fact that she'll pay my health care costs..... How's that gonna work?......OH, NO, I can feel my artistic juices drying up already with all this worry....wonder where my pizza money will come from?...oh, yea, and the beer?  Wait, I've gotta think this through..... It's just not making any sense....is it? (guess I'll go back to work in the morning...'cept I'm retired)

Read Freedom Edens Blog .  I love her last paragraph, "So the economy would come to a screeching halt, but there would be a lot of crappy art to see and bad poetry to read."
Photobucket
The Weekly Standard has an interesting article entitled  "Pelosi's Republic The House Speaker says health care reform will finally allow artists to focus on being unemployed, comfortably."

The Amazing Human Body...Some Facts...Happy St Patricks Day

The Amazing Human Body!  Do you believe ALL this?

It takes your food seven seconds to get from your mouth to your stomach.  (right..and 2 seconds to go from your stomach to your butt)
Photobucket

One human hair can support 3kg (6.6 lb).
Photobucket

The average man's private area is three times the length of his thumb.
Photobucket

Human thighbones are stronger than concrete.

A woman's heart beats faster than a man's...

There are about one trillion bacteria on each of your feet. (Think about this before you go sucking on someone's toes)

Women blink twice as often as men.  (they're saying to themselves...I don't believe what I'm hearing)

The average person's skin weighs twice as much as the brain.

Carol Burnett...Aahhh, Those Were The Days...

Remember the 'charwoman' or 'Mrs. Wiggins', Mr. Tudball, Eunice, Tim Conway as a shuffling old man plus so many other memorable characters? It began in 1967 and continued for 11 years. I went through school, dating, marriage, childbirth...all with Carol Burnett and ensemble. Thought for the day...Breast Implants & Viagra...

Don't remember where I read this the other day...but have been thinking on it ever since...

Thought for the day: There is more money being spent on breast implants and Viagra today than on Alzheimer's research. This means that by 2040, there should be a large elderly population with perky boobs and huge erections and absolutely no recollection of what to do with them.

Then....we could go into musing about how all those tatoos will look on an 80 yr old body....Photobucket

Ever heard an Outhouse referred to as BC?

The story is told of a lady who was rather old-fashioned, always quite delicate and elegant, especially in her language. She and her husband were planning a week's vacation in Florida, so she wrote to a particular campground asking for a reservation. Photobucket

She wanted to make sure the campground was fully equipped, but didn't quite know how to ask about the toilet facilities. She just couldn't bring herself to write the word "toilet" in her letter. After much deliberation, she finally came up with the old-fashioned term BATHROOM COMMODE. Photobucket But when she wrote that down, she still thought she was being too forward. So she started all over again and rewrote the entire letter referring to the bathroom commode merely as the BC. "Does the campground have it's own BC?" is what she actually wrote.

Well, the campground owner wasn't old-fashioned at all, and when he got the letter, he just couldn't figure out what the woman was talking about. That BC business really stumped him.

After worrying about it for awhile, he showed the letter to several campers, but they couldn't imagine what the lady meant either. So the campground owner, finally coming to the conclusion that the lady must be asking about he local Baptist Church, sat down and wrote the following reply:

Dear Madam:
I regret very much the delay in answering your letter, but I now take pleasure in informing you that a BC is located nine miles north of the campground and is capable of seating 250 people at one time. I admit it is quite a distance away, if you are in the habit of going regularly, but no doubt you will be pleased to know that a great number of people take their lunches along and make a day of it. They usually arrive early and stay late. It is such a beautiful facility and the acoustics are marvelous. Even the normal delivery sounds can be heard.

The last time my wife and I went was six years ago, and it was so crowded we had to stand up the whole time we were there. It may interest you to know that right now a supper is planned to raise money to buy more seats.

I would like to say it pains me very much not to be able to go more regularly, but it surely is no lack of desire on my part. As we grow old, it seems to be more of an effort, particularly in cold weather.

If you do decide to come down to our campground, perhaps I could go with you the first time you go, sit with you, and introduce you to all the other folks.

Remember, this is a friendly community.

Sincerely,
Campground Owner

Bless her heart...this proper little lady is probably still on her FC (fainting couch) with the vapors! I enjoyed this little story and just wanted to share it with you all.

Senior Sex Advice...Can't Hurt..Might Help...Dating in the 50's

This is from Suddenly Seniors

The Archives of Internal Medicine tells us that drinking a cup of Joe translates into "a higher rate of sexual activity in elderly women and a decreased prevalence of impotency among elderly men." No one knows why. I adore coffee and read just today that some speculate that the brew promotes more liberal behavior. Well, can't hurt...who knows might help?

Shoot, why not have a romantic cup 'o brew tonight before going to bed with your precious...might keep you awake a bit longer. It may be just what you need to get a leg up (so to speak) on the 'situation'. Remember, though, if you encounter an erection lasting four hours or more, contact your Dr, don't blame me. Photobucket

Oh, did I tell you? According to a recent scientific survey, the less sex you have, the worse your memory becomes.

What?

and then......
I was MUSING the other day about the 'good ole days' of the 50's...the morals, problems of the young people of that day....here's a memory from my sheltered life...

Do you recognize this instrument of torture?
Photobucket

Gals, did you have a mother that would insist on you wearing your best rubber band type girdle (hot, sticky, objects of torture with garters that become imbedded into your thighs) when you went out on a date or to a social event?

Well, mine did and I just thought she wanted me to look nice and have good posture! I just wore one without a word. I was such a good girl!!

Now I know better....Photobucket...she didn't give a whit what I looked like...she knew that girdle was impregnable...you certainly couldn't 'spread' anything with that RUBBER BAND around your lower body. Matter of fact, I don't even remember knowing what a condom was....didn't need to know about em...I had to wear a girdle! Rubber girdles didn't come off easily....why...you could figure the first 43.3 minutes after arriving home was dedicated to wresting that wet tool of torture off.....UGH!!

Can anybody else remember those 'good ole days'? Got any stories?

Enough reminiscing...just wanted to call your attention to a new IKEA shower curtain that I bought and never used..

Words for Women to Live By...

I've heard of some of these...and they are still viable things to consider. Take a minute and do a little 'musing' of your own....I'm just saying, this is how this senior citizen sees things now....

1. Aspire to be Barbie - the bitch has everything.

2. If the shoe fits - buy them in every color. (sad thing is...I used to do that very thing when I had a career and $...)

3. Take life with a pinch of salt.... A wedge of lime, and a shot of tequila. (Jimmy Buffett..meet you in Margaritaville to look for my lost jigger of salt...WOOHOO!!)

4. In need of a support group? - Cocktail hour with the girls!

5. Go on the 30 day diet. (I'm on it and so far I've lost 15 days).

6. When life gets you down - just put on your big girl panties and deal with it. (do they consider 'Depends' big girl panties?)

7. Let your greatest fear be that there is no PMS and this is just your personality. (nanny nanny boo boo...NO more PMS for me!)

8. I know I'm in my own little world, but it's ok. They know me here. (don't be jealous because the voices only talk to me)

9. Lead me not into temptation, I can find it myself. (and if I didn't have this short term memory loss...I'd be tempted less often...)

10. Don't get your knickers in a knot; it solves nothing and makes you walk funny. (wear a thong...not enough material there to get in a knot)

11. When life gives you lemons in 2009 - turn it into lemonade then mix it with vodka. (refer to #3..)

12. Remember where ever there is a good looking; sweet, single or married man there is some woman tired of his bullshit! (still got my good looking, sweet, man....)

13. Keep your chin up, only the first 40 years of parenthood are the hardest.. (wonder if it took me 40 yrs to get my brains?)

14. If it has Tires or Testicles it's gonna give you trouble. (Beware of 'retreads')

15. By the time a woman realizes her mother was right, she has a daughter who thinks she's wrong. (did I do that?)

Don't forget to hold your friends close in your heart...spread smiles generously on your 'slice of life' and enjoy every crooked grin you get in return... Go slow, enjoy...this 'slide down the back side of life' is FAST!!

I did have a 'resurrection' of sorts this past week and spent some time listing a bunch of 'treasure' at OLA.com.

A Kids Take on Mothers...Mothers Day is coming

PhotobucketHere's some totally delightful answers given by 2nd graders about Mothers.....
mom smiley cooking for kids feeding Pictures, Images and Photos

Why did God make mothers?

1. She's the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.
2. Mostly to clean the house.
3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.

How did God make mothers?
1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.
2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring..
3. God made my mom just the same like he made me.. He just used bigger parts.

What ingredients are mothers made of?
1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world and one dab of mean.
2. They had to get their start from men's bones. Then they mostly use string, I think.

Why did God give you your mother and not some other mom?
1. We're related.
2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people's moms like me.

What kind of a little girl was your mom?
1. My mom has always been my mom and none of that other stuff.
2. I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would be pretty bossy.
3. They say she used to be nice.

What did mom need to know about dad before she married him?
1. His last name.
2. She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? Does he get drunk on beer?
3. Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say NO to drugs and YES to chores?

Why did your mom marry your dad?
1. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my mom eats a lot.
2. She got too old to do anything else with him.
3. My grandma says that mom didn't have her thinking cap on.

Who's the boss at your house?
1. Mom doesn't want to be boss, but she has to b ecause dad's such a goof ball.
2. Mom. You can tell by room inspection.. She sees the stuff under the bed.
3. I guess mom is, but only because she has a lot more to do than dad.

What's the difference between moms and dads?
1. Moms work at work and work at home and dads just go to work at work.
2. Moms know how to talk to teachers without scaring them.
3. Dads are taller and stronger, but moms have all the real power 'cause that's who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at your friends.
4. Moms have magic, they make you feel better without medicine.

What does your mom do in her spare time?
1. Mothers don't do spare time.
2. To hear her tell it, she pays bills all day long.

What would it take to make your mom perfect?
1. On the inside she's already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic surgery.
2. Diet. You know, her hair. I'd diet, maybe blue.

If you could change one thing about your mom, what would it be?
1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I'd get rid of that.
2. I'd make my mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it not me.
3. I would like for her to get rid of those invisible eyes on the back of her head.

Work at Staying Fit...Easily...Senior Citizens...Pay Attention

I woke up this morning (well...... that's a positive) feeling a bit off....maybe I'm grumpy and should go hide from the world Photobucket..................or could it be that as a Senior Citizen I'm stressing about life or the shape of my aging body.
I remember an article I read in (wish I could remember) maybe Good Housekeeping that gave some good ideas and stats on easy ways to help with the battle of the bulge .....

Say "Om"
Photobucket
De-stressing can be a powerful way to whittle down. A recent study from Oregon Health & Science University found that overweight women who performed daily relaxation techniques, such as meditation, yoga, or even writing in a diary for 20 minutes, lost an average of 10 pounds after 18 months — without consciously dieting.

Stay-Skinny Pasta Photobucket
How to indulge without gaining: Cook the pasta al dente, so it's firm to the bite. Why? The longer you boil noodles, the more the starch breaks down, which raises the pasta's glycemic index. This causes your blood sugar level to rise faster — and may increase your junk food cravings too. Studies show that when you cook spaghetti for five minutes, its glycemic index is 38; after 20 minutes, it shoots up to 61. But even al dente cooking doesn't mean you can eat piles of fettuccine Alfredo every night. And high-cal pasta sauces are still off-limits.

30-Second Exercise Trick Photobucket (I hate when this happens)
Now you can work out less — and get fitter. A recent study from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, showed that about a half-hour of sprint cycling (alternating speeds by pedaling quickly for 30 seconds and then at a slow pace for four minutes) is as effective as an hour and a half of moderate pedaling. The key is the series of 30-second power bursts. Another idea for a non-type-exercise when you're taking a "sit-down" is...sit with your back against the chair and pull in your belly button back to your spine and hold for 30 seconds. Do as many as you're able. OK, just pull it in as far back as you can.

Snooze to Lose Photobucket
Add one hour of sleep to your schedule, and you could drop up to 14 pounds this year. New data from the University of Michigan shows that you'll likely eat 6 percent less if you replace 60 minutes of awake time (when you may snack) with an hour of shut-eye. And a Harvard study that tracked around 68,000 women found that those who clocked only five or fewer hours of rest a night had a 32 percent greater chance of gaining more than 30 pounds over a 16-year period than those who got seven hours of sleep.

Best Diet Breakfast breakfast Pictures, Images and Photos
Say good-bye to bagels. Start your morning with eggs, and you’ll curb cravings for the rest of the day. (It's true - this works, start your day with protein) Researchers from Wayne State University studied 30 overweight women, feeding them a breakfast with eggs, toast, and jelly one day, and, two weeks later, a bagel with cream cheese and yogurt (both meals had similar calorie counts). When the women had the protein-packed eggs instead of the bagel breakfast, they ate 164 fewer calories at lunch and around 400 fewer calories over a 24-hour period. Cut that many calories a day, and it could add up to a 41-pound loss in a year.

I just remembered a favorite breakfast from years ago - We call it
Sunday Morning Breakfast ....here's the recipe...
For an individual
Mix 2 eggs
1/4 to 1/3 C flour
1/2 C milk
Dashes of cinnamon

Pour into individual baking dish that has been
preheated in the oven with a couple of teaspoons of butter till it melts.

Bake at 425 for 15 - 20 min

It puffs WAY UP (will deflate when taken out) Serve with a bit of sugar free or fruit only preserves. You now have had 2 eggs, equivalent of a piece of toast and your dairy!! If you really want to live it up and splurge - sprinkle with powdered sugar. Try it...easy, nutritious, and delicious.........

Laugh Off 40 Calories Photobucket
It's no joke! A study from Vanderbilt University showed that you can burn up to that many calories by laughing genuinely for 10 to 15 minutes. (Watch Groundhog Day to giggle off even more weight.) Not only does it burn calories but hugely improves your state of mind!!!

Do Your Body Good

Popping a fish oil capsule can help you shed pounds. Researchers from the University of South Australia tracked 81 overweight people for three months and found that those who took a daily dose of fish oil and walked for 45 minutes three times a week lost an average of 4.4 pounds — without changing their diet. The pill-exercise combo is key: Those who worked out regularly but skipped the supplement stayed at the same weight; so did those who took the pill but didn’t walk. Bonus: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil helped improve the participants’ heart health.
