Are You Aging Gracefully?.....Well, I'm NOT

Pay attention....there's something creeping up on you...watch out
Photobucket

Relax...this is no ghost story...it's worse..GROWING OLD!

I've discovered that my mind is still processing even when I'm playing FarmVille, Cafe World on Facebook or working on my little shop at OnlineAuction.com. My husband says my mind is like the hard drive in my computer...it needs de-fragged every so often!

I didn't pay much attention to the state of my body until the last few years...so many things are going wrong...isn't there a warranty on this pile of flesh?

Here's a few of my musings...
Skin flaps...what was our Creator thinking? what is the purpose of these flappy little pieces of skin showing up willy nilly...NO place is sacred to them.

Feet...they're a changin..mine used to be a petite 6...now they're spread out to an 8.

Mirror...peripheral vision offered me a glimpse of my mother the other day. Startled me...but when she spoke...I broke into a cold sweat when I discovered it was me!

Several years ago, I put on shorts at the beginning of the season and my dear sweet husband comes up with "When you gonna press them knees?". Well, that honest observation sent me into peels of laughter...just as well laugh as cry.

This process of becoming a truly Senior Citizen thing is a nasty vicious joke.....it's MEAN ...just plain mean.

I am so sorry I used to complain about having to shave my legs like every other day. and all that armpit hair...let it go and you could have braids in a few days. Crap, now I don't have to shave those places but maybe once every month or six. That's good news and my toes never have to be shorn.

BUT.....NOW, I've got hairs growing out of selected spots on my chin....I have one long begger that is partial to my left ear lobe. Five years ago I would never have thought I would have nose hairs showing or a moustache for crying out loud.

This is a favorite poem by Donna Vickodil...

Growing Old Gracefully

There's a mole on my neck that's growing a hair
When I was younger it wasn't there
A lot of things changed since I've grown older like my fallen arches and this hump on my shoulder
Yesterday I noticed a twitch in one eye and spots on my hand that resemble a fly
I used to be able to party all night but now to stay awake until five is a fight
My breasts used to be firm and quite pert
Now I have to be careful they don't drag in the dirt
Gravity surely has taken its toll
What was once on the surface is now in a hole
The backs of my arms are wobbly like jelly and I found the remote tucked under my belly
I used to eat steak but now I can't chew it
Growing old gracefully. I don't think I can do it !
Copyright: Donna Vickodil

Is there anybody out there that really thinks this is funny? Don't laugh too loud...it's gonna happen to you

The only saving grace is my heart, as long as it beats, I am still a fun and loving aging free spirit when I'm not wrought with worry

As long as my brain functions I'm happy...except those days when I can remember when I was 6 and somebody stepped on my mud pie but today I have to check my drivers license to catch my name....(sigh)

A positive to growing old...you can tell your deepest secrets to your friends... they won't remember them either.

There's so many things I could go on about...the eyes, driving, hormones, sex, gas, memory.....aargh! Time for a nap!  Yes, I'm growing old and there's no dad-gummed way I intend to go without a ruckus!

Good News for Senior Citizens....

It ain't all bad!!! Stop thinking doom and gloom. Oh, I know it's hard, especially this time of year. The weather's bleak. Flooding in March? You are poorer and older than you were last year, and you may be fatter. OK, let's don't get negative............

Your memory is shot.  You know deep down in your heart that you are becoming forgetful and what about all your bad habits?  Wish you could just resolve to make them disappear? POOF!! All gone............(I said, don't go negative......the world is in even worse shape than you are.)

Here's some good news to bolster you.......

The older brain is a wiser brain.   According to new findings in neuroscience, your inability to remember names at cocktail parties or where you left your keys is not necessarily a symptom of early-onset dementia.  Instead, it is a sign that your focus of attention has become broader. Getting distracted could be a good thing.
Did you ever think that getting distracted allows our creative juices to flow?  "It may increase the amount of information available to the conscious mind," Shelley H. Carson, a Harvard psychology researcher, told The New York Times.

"A broad attention span may enable older adults to ultimately know more about a situation and the indirect message of what's going on than their younger peers," adds Dr. Lynn Hasher, at the University of Toronto. "We believe that this characteristic may play a significant role in why we think of older people as wiser." In other words, while younger brains are cluttered up with trivia, your brain is freed to work on a whole lot more important things.

Be excited - the windmills of your mind just may not splinter!!!

Losing the ability to think, understand, and; learn among people over 70 has been declining sharply in recent years. Brain scientists aren't sure why, but they think it's tied to the fact that older people are better educated, wealthier(oh, really?) and more active than ever before. People who are better off are more likely to use it, not lose it (unless you knew Bernie Madoff).  So remember: Like sex, mental challenges are very good for you, and you are never too old. Spending time Googling is good for you.

There are remarkable findings about brain plasticity. It seems that the brain - even the aging brain - is more malleable than previously thought.  It can even grow new nerve cells. One day, you'll probably be able to take a pill to help keep your neural pathways firing on all cylinders. Meantime, exercise, social connections, flexibility (can you touch your toes?) and eagerness to embrace new experiences are extremely effective cognitive medicine.  Do you blog, twitter, use facebook?  All are good for your brain.  I guess the exercise of learning html is a very good thing even if it gives me a headache.....sigh....guess I'll keep working on 'flowing my brain juices'...

Now THAT'S Good News!!!

Questions That Will Haunt You...Exercise Your Thought Processes

I've written several blogs concerning the demise of life as a senior and what we can do to improve the situation. (Get real....impossible) You know.....like..try to age gracefully...exercise your brain...

Like Cora Harvey Armstrong says "Inside every older person is a younger person -- wondering what the hell happened."

So in an effort to keep the old gray matter firm - here's some questions that you can exercise your thought processes by pondering on them....musing, as you will....

Can you cry under water?

How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?

Why do you have to "put your two cents in"... But it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to? (I think the government secretly put a tax on it!)

Once you're in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity?

Why does a round pizza come in a square box?

What disease did cured ham actually have?

How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?

Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV?

Why is "bra" singular and "panties" plural?
Shouldn't it be the other way around!!!

Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat? (My husband is convinced I have an obsession to make burnt offerings to the bread gods!)

If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a stupid song about him?

Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane ?

If the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can't he fix a hole in a boat?

Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours?
They're both dogs!

If Wile E. Coyote had enough money to buy all that ACME crap, why didn't he just buy dinner?

If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from?

If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons?

Do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same tune?
Why did you just try singing the two songs above?

If we call people from Poland Poles....why don't we call people from Holland Holes?

Why do they call it an asteroid when it's outside the hemisphere, but call it a hemorrhoid when it's in your butt?

Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride, he sticks his head out the window?

Why did Kamikaze pilots wear helmets?

What do you think? Come up with any explanations? Keep thinking....like Bette Davis says "Old age ain't no place for sissies." Cr*p, ain't this just the sh*ts?

Senior Citizen Life Problems...Concerns...Sex

Let's face it....George Burns comment does carry some merit.....

I sure am somber today.....

Death is inevitable so I try to keep the "Energy Vampires" at bay by smiling and laughing more!

Happiness to me is good health and a bad memory!

My daddy used to always say "Life isn't fair...but it's good"!

This is an oldie but a goodie....Remember this motto to live by: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

I LOVE martinis and my body is NOT well preserved and I'm certainly worn out.....so I've got part of it right already....

I hope as I get older I can hang on to that motto.....think I'll print it out and hang it where I will see it repeatedly.

As curiocache

HOW SMART IS YOUR RIGHT FOOT?

So maybe you woke up today and decided you wanted to skip the exercise....must not do that...try this for a change...exercise your brain.....

You have to try this, it takes 2 seconds. It is from an orthopedic surgeon............ This will boggle your mind and you will keep trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but, you can't. It's pre-programmed in your brain!

1. Without anyone watching you (they will think you are GOOFY......) and while sitting at your desk in front of your computer, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number '6' in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction.

I told you so!!! And there's nothing you can do about it! You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to try it again, if you've not already done so.

OK, so you feel silly doing this but think of it as exercise for your brain.

alphainventions.com...Hey, Senior Peeps out there, check this out...

Aesthetics48 at http://grouchow.wordpress.com/ just let us know about this site called AlphaInventions.com. I went there and clicked on the join button - the dern thing knew who I was and even had my picture, I mean instantaneously. (He must have a heck of a large file cabinetPhotobucket) Then I added a comment....Being a senior citizen that tries to exercise her brain daily, I am intrigued with this alpainventions.

Really curious how this dude can read my computer.....the screen with the different blogs changes so fast I don't get a chance to read it ...wha? do I need to get a speed reading course? or do I just sit here and watch the world fly by? WOW, it's amazing........

I read the article at http://alphainventions.com/ and, well, all I can say is I'm going to have to muse on this a bit....the idea is WAY over my curly gray head with the mushy gray matter. OK, I admit it is a lot more exciting than watching the new blades of grass grow or the dust accumulate on my furniture.

So does this alphainventions.com keep chugging along after I shut my computer down? Am I supposed to put his link on my blog ? Where do I put it? Put it in every post? Would it be appropriate to put his link on our selling websites or is it ONLY for blogs? How can you get your website urls out there? to be a part of this whirlwind............

Visit & enjoy my blog: http://supergrannysmusings.blogspot.com/

My website: http://supergrannystreasures.mybisi.com/

Does commenting alot do something positive for me? Do I need to revisit alphainventions.com every morning to get it to go go go again?

One of the keys is to get people to leave a comment - you've got to be interesting....I try, but HOW do you get folks to leave a freaking comment? It's not hard...they might find it is actually a fun thing to do.

Thanks, ACE, for the heads up, and I'll just keep checking alphainventions.com and watch the blog posts fly buy like I'm in a tornado....

5 Riddles.....Brain Exercise.....Bargains for Shoppers

5 Riddles

This is a great brain exercise for anyone...Seniors, take a few minutes and really think on these.
These are the BEST FIVE RIDDLES I have seen.....THE ANSWERS ARE AT THE BOTTOM....Don't rush through these - Photobucket think about them. I was so irritated that I could only figure out one....ENJOY...

1. A murderer is condemned to death. He has to choose between three rooms. The first is full of raging fires. The second is full of assassins with loaded guns. The third is full of lions that haven't eaten in 3 years. Which room is safest for him?

2. A woman shoots her husband. Then she holds him under water for over 5 minutes. Finally, she hangs him. But 5 minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together. How can this be?

3. What is black when you buy it, red when you use it, and gray when you throw it away?

4. Can you name three consecutive days without using the words Wednesday, Friday, or Sunday?

5. This is an unusual paragraph. I'm curious as to just how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it. It looks so ordinary and plain that you would think nothing was wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is highly unusual though. Study it and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out. Try to do so without any coaching!

3. Charcoal, as it is used in barbecuing.

4. Sure you can name three consecutive days, yesterday, today, and tomorrow!

5. The letter e, which is the most common letter used in the English language, does not appear even once in the paragraph.

How did you do? They sure are easy when you know the answers.

Work at Staying Fit...Easily...Senior Citizens...Pay Attention

I woke up this morning (well...... that's a positive) feeling a bit off....maybe I'm grumpy and should go hide from the world Photobucket..................or could it be that as a Senior Citizen I'm stressing about life or the shape of my aging body.
I remember an article I read in (wish I could remember) maybe Good Housekeeping that gave some good ideas and stats on easy ways to help with the battle of the bulge .....

Say "Om"
Photobucket
De-stressing can be a powerful way to whittle down. A recent study from Oregon Health & Science University found that overweight women who performed daily relaxation techniques, such as meditation, yoga, or even writing in a diary for 20 minutes, lost an average of 10 pounds after 18 months — without consciously dieting.

Stay-Skinny Pasta Photobucket
How to indulge without gaining: Cook the pasta al dente, so it's firm to the bite. Why? The longer you boil noodles, the more the starch breaks down, which raises the pasta's glycemic index. This causes your blood sugar level to rise faster — and may increase your junk food cravings too. Studies show that when you cook spaghetti for five minutes, its glycemic index is 38; after 20 minutes, it shoots up to 61. But even al dente cooking doesn't mean you can eat piles of fettuccine Alfredo every night. And high-cal pasta sauces are still off-limits.

30-Second Exercise Trick Photobucket (I hate when this happens)
Now you can work out less — and get fitter. A recent study from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, showed that about a half-hour of sprint cycling (alternating speeds by pedaling quickly for 30 seconds and then at a slow pace for four minutes) is as effective as an hour and a half of moderate pedaling. The key is the series of 30-second power bursts. Another idea for a non-type-exercise when you're taking a "sit-down" is...sit with your back against the chair and pull in your belly button back to your spine and hold for 30 seconds. Do as many as you're able. OK, just pull it in as far back as you can.

Snooze to Lose Photobucket
Add one hour of sleep to your schedule, and you could drop up to 14 pounds this year. New data from the University of Michigan shows that you'll likely eat 6 percent less if you replace 60 minutes of awake time (when you may snack) with an hour of shut-eye. And a Harvard study that tracked around 68,000 women found that those who clocked only five or fewer hours of rest a night had a 32 percent greater chance of gaining more than 30 pounds over a 16-year period than those who got seven hours of sleep.

Best Diet Breakfast breakfast Pictures, Images and Photos
Say good-bye to bagels. Start your morning with eggs, and you’ll curb cravings for the rest of the day. (It's true - this works, start your day with protein) Researchers from Wayne State University studied 30 overweight women, feeding them a breakfast with eggs, toast, and jelly one day, and, two weeks later, a bagel with cream cheese and yogurt (both meals had similar calorie counts). When the women had the protein-packed eggs instead of the bagel breakfast, they ate 164 fewer calories at lunch and around 400 fewer calories over a 24-hour period. Cut that many calories a day, and it could add up to a 41-pound loss in a year.

I just remembered a favorite breakfast from years ago - We call it
Sunday Morning Breakfast ....here's the recipe...
For an individual
Mix 2 eggs
1/4 to 1/3 C flour
1/2 C milk
Dashes of cinnamon

Pour into individual baking dish that has been
preheated in the oven with a couple of teaspoons of butter till it melts.

Bake at 425 for 15 - 20 min

It puffs WAY UP (will deflate when taken out) Serve with a bit of sugar free or fruit only preserves. You now have had 2 eggs, equivalent of a piece of toast and your dairy!! If you really want to live it up and splurge - sprinkle with powdered sugar. Try it...easy, nutritious, and delicious.........

Laugh Off 40 Calories Photobucket
It's no joke! A study from Vanderbilt University showed that you can burn up to that many calories by laughing genuinely for 10 to 15 minutes. (Watch Groundhog Day to giggle off even more weight.) Not only does it burn calories but hugely improves your state of mind!!!

Do Your Body Good
Dancing Milk Pictures, Images and Photos
Try to have at least three servings of low-fat dairy daily. A study from the University of Tennessee showed that dieters on a six-month program who followed a high-dairy meal plan lost nearly twice as much weight (around 24 pounds) as their nondairy-eating peers, and they shed more abdominal fat too. The researchers suspect that dairy activates fat-burning mechanisms.

Skinny Little Pill Red Pill Pictures, Images and Photos
Popping a fish oil capsule can help you shed pounds. Researchers from the University of South Australia tracked 81 overweight people for three months and found that those who took a daily dose of fish oil and walked for 45 minutes three times a week lost an average of 4.4 pounds — without changing their diet. The pill-exercise combo is key: Those who worked out regularly but skipped the supplement stayed at the same weight; so did those who took the pill but didn’t walk. Bonus: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil helped improve the participants’ heart health.
Well, after all that good advice, I guess I'll stay up and start by saying OM and meditatingPhotobucket then I'll plan dinner around some really "chewy" pasta................I think I will dig out my bike from the stuffed garage and take off the dry rotted tires and get new ones. We like to ride bikes........ not a good time for a nap - I'll do that later...make us a SUNDAY MORNING BREAKFAST, take my pills with a glass of milk, all the while laughing!! If you find you have some EXTRA time, don't forget to keep exercising your brain..read, twitter somebody, do a crossword, try to figure out html.....

This is a new twist on the Red Riding Hood & the Big Bad Wolf story..............

PhotobucketLittle Red Riding Hood is skipping thru the forest road when she sees the big bad wolf crouched down behind a log.
'My, what big eyes you have, Mr. Wolf.'
The wolf jumps up and runs away. Photobucket
Further down the road, Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf again. This time he is crouched behind a bush.
'My what big ears you have, Mr. Wolf.'
Again the wolf jumps up and runs away.
About 1/4 mile down the road Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf again and this time he is crouched down behind a rock.
'My what big teeth you have Mr. Wolf.'
With that the wolf jumps up and screams, 'Will you knock it off, I'm trying to poop!' Photobucket
